12 January 2013 — On my way out, a light rain began to fall and the sky was overcast. Crazy it may seem, but I was heading to the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) complex at about 5:15 AM to join a one-kilometer run. Yes, you’ve read it right. One kilometer, not my usual race, uh, but “why this?” Suffice it to say I wanted to accomplish something pretty special whether running a marathon or joining a run for a cause. Anyway, by the time the taxi came to a halt near the World Trade Center or around the corner of Macapagal Boulevard, the race route was already closed to traffic.

After paying the taxi driver, I slowly jog down M. Jalandoni Street a bit to warm up. Upon reaching the corner of P. Ocampo Street, I saw the lead pack of the five-kilometer participants. Judging from the noise, energy and cheers, the early rain may have clouded the skies Saturday morning but it did nothing to dampen the crowd’s enthusiasm for the said event.
What better way to start another year in running than by a podium finish for the one-kilometer category. Landing in second spot among the top three finishers was indeed a great surprise. I’m happy to be surprised! Congratulations, too, to fellow blogger Dave a.k.a. Barefoot Daves for placing first in the men’s 1-Km category.

The presence of some of my ultramarathon Team Boring friends Doc Topher and Vic whom I haven’t seen in a while, and Jet, of course, spiced up and made the post-race gathering more fun with their boring antics and jokes.

Super thanks to Amway Marketing Manager Dulce Ricafort for having me in this event, most of all to Amway Philippines Country Manager Leni Olmedo for the warm welcome. Overall, the first 1Km@Amway leg was a huge success. A simple yet well organized race. Congratulations to all finishers! Your support in the Amway One by One Campaign will surely help improve the lives of children worldwide.
Congratulations! It sure feels great to be supporting a worthwhile cause.
